Upcoming: Night Dancer by Chika Unigwe

with 2 comments

Chika Unigwe is back again with “Night Dancer”, her new baby due on June 7, 2012. The very suggestive title is reminiscent of her favourite themes for her last previous novels, and yes, once again the darker side of  women in prostitution is revisited.

In Night Dancer, Chika Unigwe now deals with the subject of dilemmas  and the age-long battle between what is traditional and all that is modern in Africa.

Like Chika, we are all expectant!

Open City: A Great View of a City

with 2 comments

ImageImage

Another Nigerian immigrant story told differently – in snapshot view – by Teju Cole, a 36 year old Nigerian street photographer based in New York City, US.

Teju’s narrator has got a magical kit for his storytelling: a pair of long legs for roaming the streets of Manhattan and beyond, and an avid pair of eyes for developing a sharp image of the city’s places and it’s people.

Open City has won the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award 2012 as a distinguished first novel, the NYC Book Award for Fiction and the Rosenthal Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Already it looks like there’s more to follow as it has been shortlisted for two other awards: National Book Critics Circle Award and the New York Public Young Lions Award.

Praiseworthy, Mr Cole.

Upcoming: “On Black Sisters Street” by Chika Unigwe

On Black Sisters Street (The Book), Chika Unigwe (Author)

Upcoming Book

Thorough and audacious are two words that describe Chika Unigwe’s research approach for her new upcoming book “On Black Sisters Street”. Her two year study into the subject of the new book(women trafficking & prostitution) involved taking to the streets of Belgium, dressed in skimpy cloths and thigh-high boots in order to empathise with the prototypes for her characters and to write a truthful story.

A Blackbird in the Oven

Upcoming Book

If  third time’s a charm then Jude Dibia is about to get really really lucky with his third book, Blackbird, which is soon to be published, especially if we go by his first two efforts. Dibia is also the author of Walking with Shadows (2005), a daring first about homosexual love and Unbridled (2007) which won him the NDDC/ANA Ken Saro-Wiwa Prize for Prose in 2007.

I will be watching the oven door closely on this one. You can read his interview with Next’s Obidike Okafor here http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/ArtsandCulture/5682645-147/story.csp>
